Emerald Ash Borer
The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) stems naturally from eastern Russia, northern China, Japan, and Korea. However, in 2002, the insect was accidentally transported into the United States. Since then, it has spread throughout the country and destroyed more than 70 million ash trees in the U.S. alone. As a result, the EAB is recognized as an invasive species to the United States.
Ash trees infested by the Emerald Ash Borer incur tremendous damage within just 1-2 years. First the canopy of the ash tree begins to thin out above the infested portions of the trunk. Then, up to half of the tree’s branches may die and fall off. Epicormic Shoots may also appear. These are sprouts that will grow from roots and the trunk.
This ultimately leaves the property owner with no choice but to remove and replace the infested ash tree.
